My First Wireless WAN Device
posted by Chip Witt

Well, Krista's annoyance at seeing random $9.95 charges on our corporate card for wi-fi hotspot access during my travels over the last year finally convinced me to give an AT&T Wireless WAN device a try. I say device, because it is not a PC card...it is the Sierra Wireless USBConnect 881, which plugs into an available USB port to provide cellular data service.

So far, so good, I guess. I'm using it to write this post, and given the length of time since my last post, this can't be all bad. 3G access, at a max of 3.6 Mbps so far, is sketchy in most locations I've tried to use it. Speeds any slower are virtually unusable, so there are times when I shake my head, and just unplug the device. I've been able to browse the web, check email, and use instant messaging at a rate of about 70% reliability...the other 30% being aggravating discconnects at inopportune times.

In dense metro areas, coverage is supposedly better for high-speed access, but time will tell if this is a worthwhile investment. At any rate, it seems better than sorting random charges, and dealing with time consuming hurdles to get connected.

See you online.

To pursue my interest in exploring the business and educational benefits of the podcasting phenomenon, I have begun a podcast for Witt'z End Technologies called "WET Pod Foo". The first episode is available online at the WET Pod Foo website.

You can subscribe to the podcast feed here with an RSS feed reader.

If you prefer, you can also subscribe through Apple's iTunes to more easily get the podcast into your iTunes client and/or iPod.

Witt'z End Technologies Site Update
posted by Chip Witt

It's is amazing how often you find "the shoe-maker's children have no shoes". We spend time dedicating ourselves to clean, up-to-date web design and content for our clients, but found our own site long overdue for a face-lift. Sadly, it just never seemed to make it to the top of our priorities list.

Well, we finally decided to follow the advice we give others. We made the time to make our web image a priority. Hopefully, you will find the site more informative, a little prettier to look at, and better aligned with current Witt'z End Technologies offerings. Of course, a website is like most aspects of a business...it will always remain a work-in-progress. If you have suggestions for improvement, do not hesitate to let our webmaster know.

Cheers,

Reordering and Re-reordering of Weblog Posts
posted by Chip Witt

Anyone that visits my weblog often enough (or has a outside utility watching the RSS feeds) may have noticed that my site got scrambled a bit recently. Posts appeared to all be from the same recent day in history instead of their actual creation date. This was due to a crashing of the hard drive in the server hosting this site, and a failure to preserve access times when restoring the plain-text files that produce the weblog entries via Blosxom. This might very well be the best argument for database driven weblog software...but I'm not sure it is reason enough to move away from my favorite.

I must admit, it took several days for me to notice...so it is possible no one else did at all. Anyway, I apologize for any confusion or inconvenience this may have caused. It's all better now...with posts reflecting thier original publication dates again.

Cheers,

CW

Weblog Changes
posted by Chip Witt

I know it seems like nearly forever since my last post...not laziness, really. I've been writing, but I just haven't finished much of it, and did not want to post incomplete information. Some of my new stuff contains tech How-Tos, product reviews, and resources for the courses I teach in technology management.

In preparation for my upcoming back-logged posts, I've made a handful of changes to my weblog. I've added an RSS 2.0 feed to compliment the already existing RSS 0.91 feed. Both work with the Live Bookmark feature in Mozilla Firefox (and other RSS readers), but 2.0 provides for enclosures. Enclosures are required for Podcasting, and other multimedia syndication. I've also added some tools to make it easier to post from wherever I am. Once again, I have been very impressed by the flexibility of Blosxom.

Anyway, if you've been following along with my posts, new, back-dated writings will be showing up in the next couple of weeks.

Cheers,

anasage.net

We're all still really excited about the arrival of Ana, our niece. Mom and baby were released from the hospital yesterday, both given a clean bill-of-health. She'll grow too fast, I know, but I can't help but look forward with anticipation for the great day Aunt Krista and Uncle Chip can take her to Disneyland!

In what has proven to be a great move for family communication around Ana's arrival, we bought a domain and setup a website within 9 hours after she was born. Can't help but wonder how many other kids will be able to claim their domain (and email address) has existed as long they have. For now, the site is dedicated to watching her grow up, but there will come a day she'll get the reins to do whatever she wants with it. I'll look forward to teaching her HTML, Unix shell, and basic systems administration tasks necessary for maintaining the site.

If you want to have a look, check the site out at http://www.anasage.net.

Off to the ETC: Email Technology Conference...
posted by Chip Witt

It just dawned on me...I haven't been to a technology conference that wasn't Linux or Apple related in three years. The last one was the O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference back in 2001. That's a long while, so it is lucky for me that I've been sponsored by my day job to participate in the ETC: Email Technology Conference in San Francisco tomorrow and Friday.

We have a particular interest in email these days, as it is full of interesting challenges that are in need of solutions in the enterprise, and we have had continuing difficulty with multi-platform client access to our current email technology infrastructure. To try to stay current with the times while shopping new alternatives, my boss decided to attend the Inbox: The Email Event in San Jose last week, and send me to the ETC event in San Francisco this week.

I'll blog my impressions of the ETC over the next couple of days, and will follow-up in coming weeks as my boss and I get to exchange notes on what we each saw on our respective trips. Should be fun...and hopefully informative.

Cheers,

CW
